Several paper surfaces are ideal to pyrograph on. The best options are watercolor paper and Bristol board.
The ideal watercolor paper is the cold pressed - 140lb (300GSM) type. This grade of paper has a highly resilient surface and can handle being pyrographed.
Note: there are two types of watercolor paper, cold pressed and hot pressed. Cold pressed has a slightly textured surface, whereas hot pressed is smooth. The textured paper has a better "tooth" to it and allows for better burning.
Bristol board is tough, but fairly smooth. The give the board a better "tooth" for burning, lightly scuff the board using a scouring pad... LIGHTLY and use a circular motion to scuff the board.

I use a 2B pencil to lightly sketch the layout and use Blu-Tack to erase any visible pencil at the end
Use a scouring pad to LIGHTLY rough up the Bristol board before pyrographing it
